Improving MariReads

Hi all.

I recently joined the
Blogging Tips forum on BookBlogs and have asked for some help in improving the look and feel of my blog. There has been a couple responses with some advice on format, content, and color schemes. But, before I start changing anything I wanted to ask you, those who stop by regularly, about your thoughts on the blog? How could I improve it? What do you like, don't like?

Concerns brought up were:

The size of the header.
Color- the black background makes it hard to read
Lack of content- too many weekly memes

I would love to hear what you all think about these and any other ideas you may have. Positives and negatives. Really. :)

Thanks a bunch.

  1. I agree that the header is a bit too tall, but that's sort of negligible imho. Just personal taste there. I also think it would benefit from a larger font with the black background. That would make it a bit easier on the eyes (of course I'm getting older too). I also have to admit that I often skim through some of the weekly things, like what's on your night stand. They're great to see, just maybe not so often. I tend to read the entries about the books much more thoroughly and I really like that you have a different reading list from me. It inspires me to check out things I would otherwise never touch. I also like that you link to a lot of things that are going on in the blogging world, because I would never see those either.

    Hope that helps!

Oh, and the fact that I do stop by when I am checking my blog flist, means that I do really like your blog. :0)

  3. I'm personally not a huge fan of the black background but that is just me. And I read most blogs in a reader so it doesn't really matter all that much. I do like having archives up higher so I can easily find old posts to comment on or review, but again, that is matter of personal preference. I love playing with my blog look -- it is part of the appeal of blogging for me!

  4. Mari, I'm with Naida on this one. I like the black background. I actually find it's easier to see on a dark background for me. The header I like. I'll be watching to see if you make any changes though. It is fun to change it up once in a while for something different.

  5. Thank you, Jenners and Dar.

The background color is definitely going to be the biggest change if I do it. I have been messing around with the sidebar and the widget placements but that is about all so far.

There is a new background/layout I am looking at changing to but I first need to figure out how to change to 3 columns. :)

  6. I'm not sure which background template you're using Mari but this is the site I used to change mine to 3 columns. There's only formats for a few on it so it's kind of limited:

What I did was set myself up a practice blog to play around with. I felt much more confident that way.

A practice blog is a great idea.
