The Sunday Salon: Traveling with the babe

Mommy NewsLots of traveling for the little girl this month. This was her second flight out of SFO. We are in San Diego this weekend. We went to a Padres game last night, going to Coronado today and to the zoo tomorrow. Busy, busy. So far, the little girl has been a trooper. It has been hard for sleeping, though. There will be sleep regression. She has been waking more frequently since we are all in one hotel room and I feel the need to not let her cry in consideration of other guests. The poor babe will be a little sleep deprived.

On the Needles

Working on a blanket for the little girl. This will be the first one I have made for her. Looking at the length after one skein, it is going to be small cuddling blankie rather a big covering blankie for warmth. That's okay, she usually only uses them to cuddle with anyway. She actually likes throwing blankets over her face when she falls asleep, so this one will be good. It is nice and hole-y. Lots of YO's.

I love the Library Thing Early Reviewers program. It never fails to get me some good, interesting books. Right now, I have three books from them that I have to read and review. The most recent arrival is

The Sunday Salon

Mommy News
Ahh, sleep. I had forgotten what it felt like to get more than 2 hrs of sleep at one time. It is heaven. The little girl is sleeping through the night finally. Yay! And she is taking 2-3 naps during the day which gives me time to blog, knit and read. Yeah, I should probably clean the house, too. I will get to that. 
Not going to lie, letting the little girl cry and not going to her was the hardest thing to do but, omg, she is so much happier when she is awake now that she is getting the sleep she needs. We went cold turkey on everything with her-no more bassinet, no swaddle, in her own room/crib. Glad it all worked out. Just look at this happy little face.

She has a  lovey that made it go a little easier for her. She snuggles with it, sucks on it, pushes it away when she gets mad then grabs it back when she's ready to sleep. It is very cute to watch. Yup, watch. Having a video monitor makes this sleeping apart a whole lot better. I do spend a lot of time while she is asleep watching her, though. :)

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissblath

For the past few months, my little girl has been having trouble sleeping. She was waking every 1.5 to 2 hrs and I was trying to comfort her each time. As you can imagine, we were both grumpy and sleep deprived. 

Before reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child I was adamant about not letting her "cry it out". I thought it a cruel way to get my LO to sleep. But after reading this book, I realized that I had to do something . 

Dr. Weissblath explains how needing to use soothing techniques the first 4 months of a colicky/extremely fussy baby can continue after they are not needed anymore and keeps baby from learning how to put themselves to sleep. The other interesting, and worrying information, was about the effects on a child from not getting enough sleep. This part got me worried about my little girl's sleep habits or non-sleep habits.

After talking with the hubby, family and friends we decided to give his "extinction method" a try; the only option we felt would work with our little girl. We stopped using the swaddle, took her out of our room/bassinet and put her in her crib and stopped picking her up every time she cried. 

The first night was the hardest but almost 2 weeks later, Emma is sleeping 10-12 hrs a night with one wake up around 4:30am to nurse. She is also taking two naps a day, usually about 2 hrs long. She is definitely a much happier baby when she is awake.

Very helpful book, but like most sleep training books, you have a lot to read through before getting to the part that tells you what to do. The first 3/4 of the book is the information about the dangers of sleep deprivation and what causes the sleep problems, etc. Once you get to the ideas on how to fix, there are more than one option, including ways to do it with minimal crying. Also, different options  are explained for different ages from newborns to toddlers.

I do wish I had read this earlier to better have avoided the sleep problems developing.

I have been reading Dreamwalk by Sarah MacManus on my iPhone while I nurse the little girl. Late at night it sometimes seems like I am "dreamwalking". I will get up in the morning and not be quite sure if I had gotten up and fed her.
