What I'm Reading

On the nightstand: I am a couple pages in to Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon for book group. Don't have much more time to get this one read. Need to get off the phone and start reading!
On the eReader: I am more than half way done with The Barter by Siobhan Adcock. Review to come very soon. Look for it later this week.
On Audio: I have a couple more cd's before finishing World War Z by Max Brooks.

I went to Kepler's in Menlo Park today after a lovely breakfast at Borrone's. The little girl insists every time. She picked out a couple books for herself and I had to get a copy of Rebecca by Daphne Du Mourier. It is my book group's pick for the coming month. This book has been on To Read list for a very long so am very excited to finally read it.

Groupon Books!

I got $40 worth of books for $24 at Books, Inc.! Woohoo.  Well, I may have gone over a bit. Shh. A few books for me, a few for the little girl... Let's just say, we had a nice day.

Those darn ebook deals

They can be almost as bad as bookstores. Browsing, is never just browsing.

I was innocently looking up info about another book that I already own and found that Divergent was only $4.99! Couldn't pass that up. Could you? 

Have already read and finished this one.  It's kind of fun reading books as soon as I buy them. Haven't done that in so long, let alone finish a book in less than 24 hours. Was sick in bed all day, so had to keep myself entertained with a good book, right?

No Willpower

I went into a bookstore the other day with the sole purpose of taking the little girl to the bathroom. Well, I guess you know how this ends.  Could you walk into a bookstore and not browse the stacks?   First, the children's area. E loves her books, too. Bet you aren't surprised about that either. We read a few books and picked one to take home. There may have also been a little crying over a green monster puppet that she really wanted to take home. She gave him a hug and waved goodbye as we walked away. So darn cute. I almost took it home with us, but I do have some willpower.
On the way to the checkout there was a nice display of YA books. One book was calling my name. I have been wanting to read it for awhile but have been trying to (unsuccessfully) diminish my TBR pile. Well, this day, I gave in. Both the little girl and I walked out with a book.  Next time we use the bathroom at the Starbucks.

and a Cat in the Hat book for the little girl.

Ooh, it has been awhile since I have shared the books that have come into my hands. I was going to list everything I have received since that last post, but figured that would be just way too long. So, here are the newest additions to my pile of TBR books.

The Ice Princess by Camilla Lackburg
I read a book later in the series, The Stonecutter, for a review this past year and really enjoyed it so I thought I would start from the beginning. Found this copy in a used book store in Seattle.

Mailbox Monday: Thin Yellow Line M.J. Urrea

I happily purchased a self published book on Amazon the other day. It is written by my cousin's wife. She used to send chapters to me and a couple other family members to read and to offer feedback.  So excited for her and hope the book does well. 
"THIN YELLOW LINE follows an investigation into the illegal organ harvest and murder of a patient at John Sealy Hospital on the barrier island of Galveston off the Texas coast."

In case you don't know, I am currently hosting a Reading Challenge to read Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books. So many great stories amongst this collection. And with all the new interest due to the movie version of Sherlock Holmes and the success of Elementary and Sherlock on TV, I was not surprised to start seeing new books influenced by Doyle and Sherlock. 
In the mail today, I received an ARC of Winter at Death's Hotel by Kenneth Cameron. 

In January 1896, Arthur Conan Doyle, the renowned creator of Sherlock Holmes, arrives with his wife Louisa at the Britannic Hotel in New York for his first American tour. Louisa is instantly mesmerised by this vibrant, dangerous city. When a woman's mutilated corpse is found in a Bowery alley, she becomes convinced from the artist's sketch that she'd seen the victim at the hotel. As more bodies start appearing, Louisa starts piecing together clues to reveal a story of madness, murder and depravity which leads inexorably back to the hotel itself and a madman who is watching her every move.

I am looking forward to reading this one alongside my readings of Doyle's Sherlock.  Another book to get me through the wait for Sherlock season 3 to start! One book for me this week. I think it's time for me to stop getting books. My TBR pile is getting ridiculous. Anyway, I bought Amy Hatvany's Best Kept Secret at the book store downtown on sale. Woot! I enjoyed Heart Like Mine. Can't wait to read this one. ___________________________
