Current Read and Teaser: Pet Sematary by Stephen King

Jill's Pet Sematary Read-Along is this month and I am totally engrossed in this book. I may be ignoring other books that I should be reading.  I have a month tp read this but will most likely finishes much sooner. Here is a snippet foreshadowing what is to come...

"Louis Creed came to believe that the last really happy day of his life was March 24, 1984. The things that were to come, poised above them like a killing sash weight, were still over seven weeks in the future, but looking over those seven weeks he found nothing which stood out with the same color." Chapter 35

Current Read and Teaser: The Winter Boy by Sally Weiner Grotta

I am currently reading The Winter Boy by Sally Weiner Grotta. (Look for my review on the 19th)

It is a bit different than my usual book, but interesting. I have two weeks to read this long book. Of course, I have just read two long books in a row before this one.

Here's a synopsis and my teaser:

Reminiscent of Margaret Atwood, Mary Doria Russell and Ursula K. LeGuin, "The Winter Boy" explores important political and social issues within a dynamic, character-driven otherworld, all wrapped up in masterful storytelling. The Valley of the Alleshi is the center of all civilization, the core and foundation of centuries of peace. A cloistered society of widows, the Alleshi, has forged a peace by mentoring young men who will one day become the leaders of the land. Each boy is paired with a single Allesha for a season of intimacy and learning, using time-honored methods that include storytelling, reason and sex. However, unknown to all but a hidden few, the peace is fracturing from pressures within and beyond, hacking at the very essence of their civilization. Amidst this gathering political maelstrom, Rishana, a young new idealistic Allesha, takes her First Boy, Ryl, for a winter season of training. But Ryl is a “problem boy,” who fights Rishana every step of the way. At the same time, Rishana uncovers a web of conspiracies that could not only destroy Ryl, but threatens to tear their entire society apart. And a winter that should have been a gentle, quiet season becomes one of conflict, anger and danger.

"Whatever powers the Alleshi possessed, Ryl was convinced that they'd be able to see right through him. Once that happened, no Allesha would be willing to select him."  ebook, Loc274 of 8160

Current Read and Teaser: The Secret History by Donna Tartt

My book group is currently reading The Secret History by Donna Tartt. We are meeting in a couple weeks and I have about 174 pages left to go. I am enjoying it and it has definitely drawn me in, but it definitely could have been half the length. Very long book.

Here's a teaser for you all... one ver long sentence instead of two. :)

"“WHEN THE LIGHTS came on, and the circle of darkness leaped back into the mundane and familiar boundaries of the living room—cluttered desk; low, lumpy sofa; the dusty and modishly cut draperies that had fallen to Francis after one of his mother’s decorating purges—it was as if I’d switched on the lamp after a long bad dream; blinking, I was relieved to discover that the doors and windows were still where they were supposed to be and that the furniture hadn’t rearranged itself, by diabolical magic, in the dark.”

Excerpt From: Donna Tartt. “The Secret History.” iBooks. https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/the-secret-history/id467953657?mt=11

Current Read and a Teaser: Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon

This month's book group read is Michael Chabon's Telegraph Avenue. I read Kavalier and Clay years ago and loved it, so I am very excited to read this one. We are meeting on November 5th so I really need to get reading on this one.

Here's a tease for you and for me, as well.

" Titus Joyner lay on his back with a pillow mashed down over his face, held in place by the hook of an arm. That was how he slept: shielded." pg 85, paperback

Current Read and Teaser: Enchantress by Maggie Anton

I just began reading Enchantress by Maggie Anton for a review I will be posting next month during a blog tour.  It is a very different book than I have read before set in the 4th Century in Babylonia and full of Jewish mysticism and history that I am unfamiliar with. It is very interesting..

"Em had assured me that my reputation would spread as a consequence of casting Dakya and Chatoi's love spell, nut I was unprepared for how soon that happened. The day after I was immersed,  I was so inundated with clients that every propitious hour until Pesach was soon scheduled for inscribing amulets or installing incantation bowls." ebook, 22%, loc 1202 of 5532

Current Read and Teaser: Ghosting by Edith Pattou

It has been a really long time since I have shared a Teaser on Tuesday. Thought I would start it up again. I love seeing what others are reading and to share what my current read is.

I am currently reading Ghosting by Edith Pattou for BookSparks Fall Reading Challenge. It is written in verse, each short entry is in first person by a different character, teens going out on the last night out before the beginning of the new school year.
Here is a little tease...
"finally the water stops. after a few minutes the bathroom door opens and mom comes out, wearing a robe, her hair wet, her eye still swollen shut."
I am reading this on Kindle so the formatting is off and I am not sure of the page. I am 27% in, though.

Current Read: Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

"Then he slid the silk and his fingers into her open palm.
    And Eleanor disintegrated."

-pg 71, Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
I love this! What girl hasn't "disintegrated" the first time the boy held her hand. Rainbow Rowell gets the emotion/feelings of these characters perfectly. I am loving this book and I am only 73 pages in.

Current Read and teaser: The Car Thief by Theodore Weesner

It took awhile to get into this book, but now that I am 90 pages in I am really liking it. It's different than what I usually read but good.

"The fear, and then the excitement, and then the calm he had felt since being locked up, were gone now, replaced by a small sickness of self-pity in his stomach. He pulled his knees up closer to relieve the pressure." The Car Thief by Theodore Weesner.

Current Read and Teaser: The Orchid House by Lucinda Rey

I am really enjoying this book. Have any of you read it? Really quite good so far and I am only 30 pages in! Anyway, want a little tease? Thought so. Here you go:

"Julia pulled her car to a stop in front of the crumbling stone steps that led up to the main entrance of Wharton Park. The house was dark, with the magnificent oak front door ominously closed." page 181, paperback.

Current Read and Teaser: Merciful Law by Darby Rae

I thought this was going to be a courtroom thriller- boy was I wrong. Different than what I thought, but really quite engrossing. Can't wait to see where this is going. Here's a quote to peak your interest:

"It was something out of a James Bond movie. Te back wall in the bar pivoted exposing a hidden room." pg 228, Merciful Law (paperback).

Hoping to have this one finished soon and reviewed before the end of the month.

Happy Tuesday!

Current Read and Teaser: Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris

I am finally reading the books that my sister lent me back when the little girl first came home from the hospital. I easily read the previous two books while she nursed since they were paperbacks. The hardcovers were a little harder to hold while nursing. So, now that the little girl is over a year old and napping during the day and sleeping in her own bed at night, I am finally finding time and hands to read my hardcover books. Yay.

Anyway, here is a little snippet from this fun, Eric-centric installment.

"Eric was pulling on his jeans, with his back to me. He hadn't bothered with underwear, not even the itty-bitty red ones." page 88.

Woohoo. Can't wait to get to this part. ;)

Current Read and Teaser: The Ambition by Lee Strobel

The Ambition by Lee Strobel is the book that has the place of honor on my nightstand right now. It is the one I pick up every night before going to bed. Hoping to finish this week, but the little girl is having difficulties sleeping so not getting much reading done. I keep falling asleep.

So far, finding the book interesting. Lots of characters to follow including Eric Snow.

Oh sure, he still prayed--after all, he's a pastor. But more often than not, his impromptu petitions were now tossed hurriedly toward heaven. pg.62

Current Read and Teaser: The Tapestry of Love by Rosy Thornton

The Tapestry of LoveThis week's teaser is from The Tapestry of Love by Rosy Thornton. I just started this one but so far I am really enjoying it. Lots of great quotes I could have shared but decided on the following...

"Aground in the centre of the flood, Catherine's car split the sheep the way rocks split flowing river water. For a dizzying moment she entertained the illusion that the car might dislodge and be swept downstream with the sheep." page 1.

Teaser Tuesday

Dreamwalk
I have been reading Dreamwalk by Sarah MacManus on my iPhone while I nurse the little girl. Late at night it sometimes seems like I am "dreamwalking". I will get up in the morning and not be quite sure if I had gotten up and fed her.

Anyway, here is my tease from Dreamwalk...

"Then a thrill of anticipation rose in me as I realized I could now spend the rest of the night watching videos of Shane-listening to him try to play a guitar, trying to catch up with his future. And I started to wonder if I wasn't some kind of crazy person" pg 95 (ebook)
