Armchair BEA: Children's Books and YA

Having been a PreKindergarten teacher for nine years and now a mother of a two year old, I have a very large children's picture book library. I started off the year very diligently sharing some of the little girl's favorites here on the blog but haven't in quite awhile. (I really should start those posts up again. Her reading choices have definitely changed since the last.) I have also gone through many YA books in recent years.

I love children's books. The stories that range from simple to complex, the way one book can be used in so many different ways to teach, the beautifully illustrated pages. How a book meant for children can enthrall and resonate with adults is just amazing to me and it happens so often. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, The Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling, and The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyers are just a few examples.

Here are some of mine and the little girl's favorite books:

Board Books

Picture Books

Middle Grade

YA

Children's Classics

Happy Reading!

  2. I'm completely going "Oh my gosh! I remember that one!" to most of these! I loved Click, Clack, Moo. And Holes, and The Secret Garden! You remembered some of the best ones. Ah, reminiscing big time, now :)

I definitely think you need to start posting your daughter's favorite books. I would love to see if my favorites and my younger sisters' favorites are still popular with little kids today!

  4. I had a little trouble compiling my list because I (obviously) haven't been a kid in awhile, and I have no idea if the books I loved are still the books other people read to their kids!

But it was so wonderful to take that trip down memory lane, it made it really clear how important the books were to who I am now.

If you want to read your daughter any Australian books check out outmy Chldren's literature post

  5. Love your recommendations! Many of them are sitting on our shelves here at home. I wish I'd thought to include board books in my post -- I went right to middle school books.

    1. We have been reading so many of them lately, it was hard not to include them. Although, the little girl is starting to really enjoy longer picture books now.

  7. I love picture books; even before I had a son and started my own home daycare, I was buying picture books for myself. There are some utterly beautiful works of art amongst them, and some just plain wonderful stories as well. I've been reading so many these days, and I love how engaged and captivated the little ones are in the stories. They go through phases of liking certain books. I can't wait till they're older, though, and I can read ones that have more text and more artistic drawings in them!
