The Lacuna: A Novel by Barbara Kingsolver

I have not read all of Barbara Kingsolver's books but the ones I have read have all been amazing. The Lacuna is no exception. I enjoyed picking it up every night for my daily reading before bed these past couple weeks and it has been the perfect read for me here in Lajitas, TX down near Big Bend National Park. This was a book I enjoyed reading slowly, being sure to take it all in and not miss anything by trying to get it finished quickly.

The Lacuna is a novel written as journal entries by Harrison Shepherd from the time he was a young teenager into adulthood. They recount his adventures through Mexico in the 30's and 40's and into his adult life in America. I felt like I was there experiencing his encounter with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and the life he led working for them in Mexico City. Harrison and everyone he meets throughout the book are so fleshed out and real that I kept forgetting that this was a novel and not a memoir.

Beautiful prose, epic storytelling, and intriguing characters. I couldn't ask for anything more. Loved it. It has become a new favorite.

Moving Day by Meg Cabot

Allie Finkle and her family are moving and she is not too happy about it. She doesn't want to change schools or have to make new friends. She doesn't want to give up her geode collection and her pink perfect bedroom. The new house is old, dark and looks like a haunted house. She will do anything to keep her parents from moving.

What a fun book for young girls. The voice of Allie is right on. It sounds just like my niece (who will be getting this book next) and her friends. Her comments and observations, her rules-everything was just really cute and funny. Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls is a series all girls will enjoy especially if the other books are as fun as this one. There are three other books out that I can't wait to get and read before passing them on to my 9 year old niece.

Oh yeah, and the cover is really cool. The dust jacket is actually a poster!

Miami Book Fair Authors

The Miami Book Fair is coming up soon. November seems like a long time from now, but you know it will get here sooner than you expect. If you are thinking about going to a Book Fair this year, definitely look into attending this one!

Miami Book Fair International

How great is that poster art? Anybody recognize it? Jeff Kinney, author of the Diary of A Wimpy Kid books designed it. Great, huh?

This Book Fair sounds really great. 300 authors will gather in downtown Miami to read from their works in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Haitian Kreyol. The International aspect of this fair sounds amazing. Al Gore, Sanjay Gupta, Barbara Kingsolver, Margaret Atwood, and Meg Cabot are just some of the authors that will be participating. 

If only I lived in Florida! If you are in the Miami area from Nov 8-15th be sure to check out all the fun.

Since some of us will not be able to attend how about enjoying a little taste of it here?

Also, I will be highlighting a couple of participating authors in the weeks to come with reviews of their books and perhaps a contest or two.
