passing it on

Needles

Our librarian was fascinated with my knitting during registration this summer. She and I sat together, me knitting and her cross stitching some ornaments, keeping ourselves from getting bored when there was a lull in people to register. She shared with me how she loved to watch her mother knit when she was younger, but never learned herself. She brought this lovely poncho to school a couple days later that her mother had made for her a number of years earlier. It is one of the things she chersishes the most since her mother passed away.

Later that day, she asked if I would like a pair of her mothers needles that she had as well. I, of course, said yes if she wouldn't miss them. She told me that having the poncho was the most special for her and it would be better to pass on the needles to someone who would use them.

So, last week, in my mailbox at school I find these beautiful large wooden needles. They are so much more than I was expecting. I don't even know what size they are, but they are wonderful. Other teachers who saw me walking back to my classroom stared at them in wonder. I just told them I was off to take care of some vampires, ala Buffy. Hehe.

I can't wait to try these. I 'm going to need some really, really bulky yarn!

  1. OMG! Those are some really HUGE needles! They look like decorative pieces. They might be 35s. Tara got some of those but couldn't knit with them I think. How could you when you can barely get your hand around them?

    Good luck anyway!

  2. Hee, the only reason I couldn't knit with the 35s was because it was a circular needle and I was using DK-weight yarn (this was also one of my early projects, so it was really difficult to manage the stitches! I'm sure I wouldn't have a problem with it now. :D ) But those look bigger than 35s to me! 50s, maybe?
